fire safety give-away

This is a Re-post, so if you already left a comment, you are free to go!

I mentioned last week that I have such a phobia of fire that I have a hard time relying on myself to communicate the need for Fire Safety to Jake in such a way that doesn't risk giving him the same crippling complex. And how I have totally relied on Firefighter Dayna to teach my kid about it from inside the box. Dayna has dropped a Fire Safety care package in the mail to me, and I would like to give it away to one of my readers.

You know I'm not a give-away or promo blogger, it's just that this is so important to me. Both the safety part of it and the not passing along anxiety part. And the fact that some of my anxiety is lessened by passing along safety awareness.

Anyone can win, just leave a comment. You don't have to be a parent or a teacher, just someone who knows a little kid.

And if you really want to get into it (although the winner will be picked on Thursday April 9th at noon using Random.org, not by how good your story is) please tell me about what you wanted to be when you grew up when you were little and why. I'd love to know, especially if you ARE what you always wanted to be or if you do what you do because someone inspired you.

I wanted to be a veterinarian. I still love animals, but seeing then in pain hurts my insides. Then I wanted to be a layer, because I didn't know any better, and lastly I wanted to write greeting cards. Unfortunately, I've never done any of these things as an adult, but I was 8 when I dreamt them up, and I was shaving the heads off my barbies and burying them in the sand.

I wanted to be a unicorn.

Or a lawyer.

Or a marine biologist.

But mostly I just wanted to be a unicorn.

I wanted to be a veterinarian. I was one of those "animal lovin'" kids, until I grew up and had to clean my own house. Now there are none. Poor kids. If I ever live in the country the first thing I'll do is go buy the biggest, outdoorsiest dog I can find for my son who thinks animals rock.

Then I wanted to be a journalist, but the school didn't want me, so now I have my teaching degree and am currently a substitute teacher (except for the maternity leave).

Funny story: Once, when we were kids, a close friend of mine told her mom she wanted to be a prostitute for Halloween. Her mom (my grandma, actually) didn't know what to say, I think she just said to pick something else. My poor grandma is very proper and churchgoing, not that she wouldn't laugh about it now. I think we may have watched Pretty Woman, and my friend didn't really catch on to what a prostitute was, except that she got to wear flashy clothes and kick-ass boots.

I'm not posting to play for the giveaway, you know, distance and all but...

I always wanted to be a vet. Until my brother died when I was 17. He wanted to be a doctor and I was also considering it. He didn't think he'd ever achieve it. Anyhow his death sealed the deal for me as I decided to fulfill the dream for him.

During the viewing before the funeral I slipped a note into his hand that simply read 'we WILL be a doctor'. I sat my university entrance exams 2 days after teh funeral, not sure that I'd do well enough to get into medicine but came away with 94.45 (of 100) and all the doors open to me. I'm convinced my brother helped me out.

Never shared that before, see how much I love you :)

And that's why I am where I am today and I went from animals to humans.

The end!

I wanted to be a weatherman...weatherwoman? That sounds stupid. Meteorologist, I guess. Mostly because there was this TV weather guy named Al Kaprielian ( he's apparently a cult favorite: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Kaprielian ) that I used to watch growing up and I was in love with him. He was a huge nerd who wore ill-fitting suits and was kind of spazzy, but I thought he was AWESOME. He came to my grade school once for an assembly and asked some weather trivia questions. I got so many of the answers right (I may have also been a nerd...) that he bought me lunch which was one of the highlights of my young life.

I am a software engineer, so no, not a weather person, but I still watch the weather channel obsessively and have crushes on local weather personalities.

A writer. I actually have a drawing that I made in second grade of all the covers of the books I'd someday write. Did this pan out? No, not yet anyway. I'm about to graduate with a degree in Screenwriting, so if mine does turn into a success story, I'll feel particularly triumphant now that you've reminded me of how writing has been a lifelong dream. And if I end up living in a box on the freeway eating dead rats, well...

When I was little little I wanted to be a nurse. At some point, though, I realized that I would have to deal with puke and death and stuff. Maybe by third grade I re-evaluated.

I have yet to really touch upon fire safety, because I'm kind of rotten about some things. I might have to get one of these to get started. Boo on reality.

I wanted to be a paleontologist (Woohoo, spelled from memory!) when I was a kid. I had a ton of those rubber/plastic dinosaurs and I'd play with them for hours. However, Jurassic Park scared the living hell out of me.

Now, the only thing I dig for is that one god damn sock that I can never find the mate to, in the bottom of the basket of clothes that never seem to get put away. But hey, I can stay up after 8pm now, so score!

So I have been thinking and thinking about how to best answer your questions, even knowing that the strength of my response doesn't have any bearing on the winner (me) of the goods. I think this question and some of the meme's going around are contributing to an early mid-life crisis thingee that I am dabbling in right now. When i was a kid, I wanted to be a riding instructor. I never had my own horse, I was never particularly good, I was too shy to compete in any shows, but I loved riding and that was probably the answer I gave most consistently growing up. Super ambitious and super practical, given the limitations already listed, right? Also a marine biologist. Also a vet. Also a journalist. (These are already listed so I look like a total copier.) I had strength and promise in biology and was editor of my high school newspaper, but once I got to college I sort of fizzled out and concentrated more on having fun than pursuing a lifelong dream. I ended up doing pretty well career-wise, but I was never driven by a passion for what I was doing. Anyway, now I dote on my children and at the same time wonder what could have been and why I am not more of what I thought I would be when I was a kid. The age-old tale, we've heard it all before. I think stopping work has contributed to my sometimes-angst/early (notice how I have to say early) mid-life crisis. There is always that 'what if' and now I have more time to think about it.

I love reading all these answers, by the way. Your readers are a wonderful. Feel free to take credit.

I wanted to be a veterinarian. And I am now a veterinary technician. Soooo glad to be the nurse instead of the doctor. Little did I realize that the vet deals more with people, and the tech deals more with the animals. I am way more of an animal person than a people person. So even though I make a ridiculously LOW amount of money, I'm way happier!

I have always wanted to be a photographer. My parents bought me my first SLR at a young age and I have been seeing beauty through a lens ever since. I have not yet achieved my dream due to life slowing with 3 kids, but I continue to invite myself to random cities and ask people to take me on photo tours, so we'll see how it goes.

I wanted to be a garbage man, because the garbage man got to ride on the back of a truck.

I also wanted to be lucky, because lucky people always won stuff.

I am totally obsessed with fires. Okay not like a pyro, more fear obsessed. It's my OCD, I check every outlet a least three times and blow out candles that were already blown out! I have a serious problem. thought I would share...
