why I keep "takin' pikchurs of yer feet". And the nape of your neck, and the curl of your eyelashes.
why I don't want you in my bed but I don't kick you out either.
why sometimes I cry when we are having a fun time.
why I can't stop staring.
why I put your hands in my mouth.
why we can't touch our tongues together.
why we go to bed when it gets dark and we get up when it gets light.
why I like to read you the same books my mom and dad read me when I was little.
why we make chains out of strips of colored paper.
why all I want for my birthday is a big huge giant most enormous really good great hug.
why I count the hairs on your head.
why we bend the rules sometimes.
why boys and girls have different parts. And where babies come from.
why I have to go to work to get the monies.
why you have to sit in the back seat where it's safe.
why I still hold you like a baby.
why I need you to go to sleep so I can go to sleep too.
why sometimes it has to rain.
why we eat vegetables before we eat anything else.
why you can't play out front by yourself.
why good people can do bad things. And the other way around.
why sometimes we don't share.
why my little brother is bigger than me.
why I'm still Mimi's baby even though I'm bigger than her.
why you'll be my baby even when you're not a baby.
why I kiss you a bazillion times before bed.
why I thank you for today.
why some people live far far away.
why your cat never came home.
why I do.
why we both need a time out every now and then.
why you can look, but not touch.
why there are some things that I just don't have an answer for.
why me and daddy made you.
why big people don't take naps.
why some books don't have pictures.
why I don't let you watch the news "like a man does".
why we have to be gentle with other people's feelings and bodies.
why candy apples aren't healthy even though there is an apple in there.
why some people don't speak English.
why I never tell you to stop asking why.

this was really sweet. were you giggling as you typed? i would have been :)
i adore this.
Perfection.
This made me smile the whole time I read it. It's so sweet!
This was a great post. I take it Jake is in the "why" phase...
Thank you.
Oh. I love this. So, so much.
Touching.
Well done.
Print and tuck that under a mattress. That's a keeper.
:-)
Wow, Lora awesome post. I love it, made me think about some of the things my boys will understand when they are "big". Francesco does not understand why I won't let him drive the car.
why I insist on taking your picture on every first day of school.
why I make you kiss me goodbye even in front of your friends.
why I walk you all the way to the playground entrance.
why it's still hard not to cry when your hand slips out of mine.
My kids just started school today and apparently I need a list of my own like this. Totally stealing your idea (oh, I mean, using you as inspiration) to get me through this day. :)
Why you made me cry on Monday morning, even while making me smile.
Aw - love this.
Absolutely genius!
I loved it!
<3
But, but, Candy Apples ARE healthy...
Sigh. I wish they stayed younger just a teensy bit longer.
Chuckling with tears in my eyes! This was awesome-
(about big people and naps- it should be a rule....or a LAW!!)
Awww, he wants to watch the news "like a man does." That slays me.
Perfection.
My "baby" started kindergarten on Monday. I annoyed her by taking pictures in front of the school sign. So all the first-day pix are of a slightly mortified 5-year-old, and I sent it to everyone anyway.
Someday she'll understand ...
I'm also an annoying mom who takes pictures every first day of school, Halloween, Christmas, birthday, etc.
And big people don't take naps? We need to fix that. I've often said we need an official siesta time here in the States.
what a great list. seriously. what a lucky little dude to have a mama like you :-)
I think I was about 20 before I understood most of the 'Why's'. These days, it's about age 10.
What everyone else said. But why do we make chains out of colored paper? Maybe I'm not big enough yet. I better start eating.
I love this - I am all misty eyed over here. There is nothing quite like the love and lessons from a mother. I can't wait for your little man to read these when he's older and will take them all to heart! oxoxo
This is so lovely. I can relate to your feeling as a mom. We're lucky, aren't we?
Love this. Thank you. :)
You are SUCH a perfect mom Lora.....
This is absolutely beautiful! It actually made me a little tearful, I'm so glad you reposted this.
I still adore this.
This was well-timed for me. My 18 year old baby just returned from his graduation summer road trip from Florida to California. I was so scared to let him go off on his own. But he came home with a different set to his shoulders and said it felt like he came home from a voyage. I'm glad I let him set sail.
Why I love the smell of your breath in the night.
I've missed you.
lora- i loved this in 2009 and still do.
AND- as i read it this time i thought to myself, big people should take naps.
evidently i haven't changed much because i saw my comment from 2009 and i talked about naps then too.
clearly, i'm obsessed with sleep (or lack there of!)
hugs-
Lovely, Lora.
And here's how we differ. I'm a big person (a bigger person than I used to be). And I take naps. And I often tell my boys to "for the love of God, stop asking WHY!"
