like a necklace made of teeth

I don't believe, of course, that the slips of paper found in Chinese cookies hold a prophesy.  But I find that they most often hold a tiny truth.

I hoard these truths.

I slide them into places where I don't look often but that warrant my attention from time to time.  Junk drawers, button jars, under the silverware tray.  In a velvet jewelry pouch, under a souvenier magnet, tucked in with the aluminum jack o'lanterns.

I'm clearing out the crevices today.  Finding bits of wisdoms in the wake of cat hairs, ink pens, and wheat pennies.

Beauty will surround you - open your eyes to see it.
You are admired by everyone for your talent and ability.
The philosophy of one century is the common sense of the next.
Be unconventional, even visionary
It's not the end yet.  Let's stay with it.
You will sleep well at night.
To let another into your heart, first let yourself in.
You are almost there.
A warm smile is testimony of a generous nature.
Love is for the lucky and the brave.
Great attention to detail is both a blessing and a curse.
You are free to invent and re-invent your life.
Don't panic.
The calling that has sounded may not be the lasting call.
If you continually give, you will continually have.
Love always and deeply.
Your heart will always make itself known through your words.
Love begets love.

At least these sound fortuney. Lots of times they're just statements. Not very exciting statements.

My friend once got a fortune in a nice family Chinese buffet restaurant that said, "Some good fuck is coming your way." Now that was one hell of a typo! She framed it.

You know we always end our fortunes with "... in bed." I know it is very mature of us but you need a little laugh every once in a while.

We do that "in bed" thing too!
Actually I noticed that those two words go well with you cookie prophecies.

Darn I wish I would get one like Momish's friend got.

another "in bed" adder onner over here.

I can't stand Chinese food, so I never get fortune cookies. You'd think that the rarity of getting said fortunes would have me putting more stock into them. But I still just can't help but imagine that there is a room full of 5 year old kids, and a transcriber that types in whatever they say. Obviously, Momish received one from a kid with Tourette's.

Jack, who apparently had been interested in me for sometime, finally decided to "make his move" after reading his horoscope online. It said something about planets aligning and "soul mate territory ahead." That was six years ago...

I had "Your ambition can be your undoing." on my bulletin board for ages.

"in bed" all the way. I thought it was a local phenom...guess I was wrong! I like to save the really good ones and hide them in books I know I will read again a year or two down the road.

My current fortune (the good ones make it to the fridge of fame) is : You are a bundle of energy, always on the go.

No shit.

I tuck them in places too, my wallet behind old credit cards or in my diary or on a cork board...I got a really good one on my anniversary.

Your blog never fails to amaze me. Oh if only I had your eyes, soul, insight, and ability to correlate all into such beautiful writing. It's really something I so look forward to every day. Thank you for it.

OK, so the day we left the hospital to bring home June we ordered Chinese take-out for dinner. When I opened my fortune cookie the fortune read: "You will soon have good news to share with the world" and the back of the fortune with the "learn Chinese" on the back? Was the Chinese word for "June." FREAKY SHIT, DUDE. I still have it in the photo album of her first year.

I love the fortunes! I think they are fun :)

I used to collect these as a child. I always seem to get the really condescending life-lessony type ones about being kind to others. Please. Where's my promise to come into money or suddenly gain fame and admiration? I thought fortune implied fortunate.

a few thoughts...

i love chinese food. especially a good egg roll

the blessing and curse of paying attention to details is right up my alley.

for what its worth, i had never heard the term 'wheat penny' until about 10 seconds ago.

Yep, ending them with the 'in bed' makes a whole different message. I love finding them later in a jacket pocket!

I got one that said "A small stranger will come into your life," and I was pregnant with my firstborn. I saved that one because it was so fun.
