I just don't have it in me to sit down and type My Christmas Story, but I promise I will, for anyone who cares.  It was a good one, and I'm typing this on my awesome new notebook that Dave put under the tree for me.

Samantha and I exchanged gifts when she stopped by yesterday.  I gave her a candle and an ornament and a rosemary plant that surely won't die because I've kept it alive for quite some time now and she gave me a hobnail milkglass decanter and a half a bottle of rum.

Both fit snugly right behind my sink, which is one of my favorite spots in the house.
The decanter goes perfectly with my planter, and Mary bellied up to the rum as soon as she saw it.

She's funny like that.  I don't know if you know this about her, but Mary is a drinker.

Sure, she's all like "I swear to my son that I've never had a drop".  Something about how she never lets sinful liquid pass her lips (then she makes a horrid joke about "either set" and I just ignore her because I think that's SO gross and immature.)  But she gets so boozy all the time and when you call her out on it she's all "God musta made me miraculously intoxicated by putting the blood of my son in my veins via divine angelic intervention.  The only "spirit" I know of is the Holy Spirit".

Mary is a lot of things.
Unfortunately, billshutting boozehound is one of them.

Whatever.

Anyway, if you like dark spiced rum (I do, I usually drink Black Seal) you should try the Kracken.  The bottle is so awesome that I want to buy taper candles and let them burn down all around the label and save it forever and ever.  I just might.
Sam and I tried it with Diet Coke and Ginger Ale.  Both were good.   I picked up some Reed's Ginger Beer (which actually has ginger listed on the lable, unlike Canada Dry or Seagrams, which just list "natural flavors", FYI) at Trader Joe's, and maybe I'll mix that up for New Year's tomorrow.  Champagne and I aren't friends.

What are you doing for New Years?
We are headed down the street to Kat Kat's (Jake's favorite great-aunt) and spending it with the fam and then going to bed shortly after the ball drops.
I'm not really a fan of the holiday.  Maybe if I lived somewhere warmer I would be.  And if it all happened at about 8.30 rather than midnite.  I keep saying that I'm going to spend a New Year's Eve on a boat somewhere in the Caribbean but so far it's been all talk.  Wouldn't that be great?  A huge dome of starry sky and fireworks all along the coast?  Wearing something breezy and drinking something freezy and tasting strawberries and limes and salt on everyone's lips when you kiss them for luck?  The cold drips off the glasses would soothe your sunburned back when when people wrapped their cocktail-laden arms around you to give you a big old hug while remembering auld lang syne?

Maybe 2011.
Let me know if you're in.  We're gonna have to start planning now.

I'm hoping to do a post tomorrow, but if not, I wish you a safe and happy tomorrow night!

Your plan for NYE 2011 sounds like heaven to me. I'm so in if I can avoid getting knocked up with baby #2 by then. :)

Seriously... Mary as a Boozehound *holds in urine* that's funny!

I want to try that spiced rum I LOVE the bottle. And now I'm on the search for this yummy ginger ale you've listed too!

I forgot to comment about NYE your 2011 plans sound outstanding!!! I've always figured if I'm with the ones I love and that mean the most to me we could sit in a dark closet telling ghost stories and I'd still have fun!

P.S. Have you tried Buffalo Rock's Spiced Ginger Ale? I'll be checking the label tonight while at Wal-Hell and see about the ginger in there. It's REALLY spicy but so tasty. Burns your throat when you first taste it.

The virgin ROCKS next to The Kracken.

OMG! I haven't even read your post! Now I have to go back. I'm always too anxious when I come here.

Sorry.

But not really.

But kinda.

I'm in, too!!! (If you don't mind a non-drinking grandma-type who looks like Madam Mim!) Love your special corner in the kitchen!

Of course she's a drinker! Why do you think he changed the water into wine at Canaan when she told him they were out of wine! SHEESH!

Seriously? We are staying home. Prolly in bed by 10, since my kids have this dreadful habit of getting up before the dogs.

yikes! rum and i arent on speaking terms. ever since he repeatedly made me give up my lunch and dinner and cause a sonic boom of a headache, i had to let him do his thing and i do mine.

also, love your take on mary and her drinking.

Hey, if your kid was crucified, you'd be a drinker too!
Milk glass and rum; now that is a Good Friend.
And I'm in for the 2011 Carribean holiday. Let me know where to send my deposit.

I'd love to try something new for new year's eve, but can we still make it for 8:30p like you said? I'm not much into being out at midnight anymore in me ole age. (Being up at midnight at home is a whole other story, LOL!!!)

I missed the 2011 plans...shoot! I'll have to go back and look. Maybe that was the boat in the Carribean one. It is nice to do the same thing on a lake...and July 4th is the best time for that deal.

I had no idea about Mary. I guess that is why she always looks so calm and pleasant. I really like the grotto you have made for her.

I don't drink either. Can't with the meds for the rheumatoid arthritis. Not ready to end it all. I don't have any New Year's resolutions. I quit smoking nearly 3 years ago and quit drinking altogether about 1 year ago. I mean nothing with alcohol goes into me. Anyway, after quitting all that stuff that made life fun...stinky but fun...I now feel worse than I ever have in my life. *LOL* Life is weird and I love it.

If you get a chance this website:

has the funniest movie about the Kraken. It was most hilarious.

Dude...you need to rethink NYE! Not that your imagining of it isn't delicious...but what if it's just a quiet place for you to remember where you've been and make some wishes about where you'd like to go?
ESPECIALLY if those wishes include cocktails on a boat in the Caribbean.
You are fabulous: Happy New Year.

I agree with Kelly...be with the ones you love and New Years' Eve will be terrific. This is what I plan to do. Dinner with those I love and bed early! 2009 was great for me; so I am looking forward to 10!! It is going to be amazing..I just know it!
Happy New Year

With 2 kids that are up before 7am on a regular basis, I'll be lucky to even see the ball drop. How sad is that? Maybe we'll play Family Feud on the Wii after the kids go to bed. I was up until 1am the other night trying to beat the damn Yang family. Plus that's definitely a game to play while drinking.

Im in. Oh how wonderful that sounds. My friends and I are going to be in Stow (right beside Kent) going to a nice dinner and then back to my friend's house for an all-nighter. I don't have many of those left, so I am living them up while I can. I have a fab dress, fab shoes, and a fab headpiece to wear. I am so very excited. But the slick sidewalks might just kill me with my fab 5" heels. A nice pair of sandels and a breezy dress sound much nicer. I vote for the Virgin Islands...

Have a safe holiday! We are going out to dinner with reservations at 7pm. We should be home by 9:30 and in bed by 10. I like to stay off the streets for amateur night.
Thanks for all the great posts this year.

As a Jewish girl I kind of feel like I shouldn't be laughing at this post. But hey, if you can write it I can laugh at it, right? ;)

Happy New Year to you, as well. Looking forward to a great year ahead and all that BS. And man, what a fantastic idea for NYE '10. I am SO in!

We're heading to our friends' lake house just across the border in NC. They made homemade firefly and limonchello. God help me.

I'll come to Philly for that-- sounds like the right idea. I've always said you have your priorities in order!
