This is the last Thanksgiving post, I swear.

It's just that I had such a great time at home, which really isn't my home and I didn't even step foot in a house that I ever spent any quality time in because my mom is in the third house since the one we lived in when I was in high school and my grandmother is in the home and my dad is long gone outta town and I didn't go to my aunts and uncles or friends' parents and I didn't go to any stores or bars or restaurants, even though I planned to.

It was just good to be home in the town I grew up in.

We all cooked Thanksgiving Proper in my mom's house.  My mom had both her kids and their families under her roof for the day.  And the cat.  Can't forget Impy.  She's 17 years old but too silly to realize she's old.
Turkey and stuffing and mashed potatoes and yamallows and lasagna and crescent rolls and two kinds of green bean casseroles and artichoke dip and and and.

I knew that I was completely and utterly grown up the minute I realized that my kitchen is better than my moms.  It's laid out better, it's bigger, and it has all sorts of gadgets and pans and pots and baking dishes and serving platters and stuff like that.  Her's?  Not so much.

I missed my kitchen.

My kitchen that is almost done, save for a shelf installation.  A shelf installation that I should have up by Christmas.
Wallpaper has been stripped, paint applied, countertops and sink replaced, and backsplash installed.
And I did it All. By. Myself.
Except for the countertop installation.  And demolition.
Sometimes a lady has to let a gentleman step in.

See (click to embiggen)?

The shelf will go right up above here.  That's the table from my great grandma's farm house and the sugar bowl is part of my grandma's set and the chairs belonged to a friend's grandparents.  The fishbowl I stole from Manny Brown's a million years ago in a drunken act of vandalism.  I also ate cigarette butts that night on a dare, so that about lets you know how bad off I have to be to steal something.  Don't ask.  Oh, and that string of pearls on top?  I wore those to my senior prom.
That's Jake's tie on the back of the chair.  He can't get enough it, and has two more.  He wears them to work daycare on the days he feels like helping out with the babies.
And aren't those pictures on the weird diagonal thing just precious?
Here's a close up:

The shelf brackets will match the frames.  I have some bird prints that match the flowers, but birds in the kitchen seemed yucky.
***

Don't you love the old daVinci print?  I got it at a thrift store for pennies and the colors are really bright.  It's hard to tell here because I have the World's Crappiest Camera, but I'll show you next time you're over.  Every Good South Philly Kitchen has one.
Yo mama's so old she was the cocktail waitress at the last supper.
***

Stove.  Yawn.
I wish it was white or stainless steel.  I'm not so much of a fan of the black appliances.
I am so much of a fan of the old avocado ones.  But I don't even think they make those anymore.
***

I just couldn't get the color right in this picture.  The backsplash is brushed silvery.  I didn't repaint my cabinets, they are still holding up pretty well from when I did them five years ago.  I wanted new drawer pulls, but I can't find any that I love that screw in from the front like those do.  Everything I like, you just poke through and put a nut and washer in from the back.  That's not going to work.  Oh well.

Don't you just love my busted up Mary doll?

We have long talks while I do the dishes.

She hangs out by the fauxfern and the bowl of beads.  I told her the fern is a palm tree.  You know, to remind her of the Middle East where she grew up.  I don't tell her what it's like over there now.  She's old and I don't want to upset her.
Mostly we just talk about our kids and stuff.
We both love open toed sandals and hoodies, so sometimes we talk about clothes and shoes.
She was the one who suggested I use olive oil instead of hair conditioner.  That's what they did back then.
We talk about all sorts of things.
Girl stuff, you know.

Those are the glass beads I found at a sidewalk sale, and that  bowl was a wedding present to my parents from my grandparents.
The best part about when your parent get divorced?  You get all the good stuff because they don't ever want to see it again.
I like to look at this stuff while I do the dishes.
***

Microwave and fridge, butter dish and red tinsel.  Not exciting, but I couldn't leave you with a half tour.

So what do you think?
I've been keeping you involved with this from the start.  Do you think I held true to the original inspiration?  I veered a bit, but I really love it.
When are you coming over for dinner?

I love old things- my husband does not- but he also like people who sound like their pushing out shit when they sing, but that is for another time.
I love when people have things other then the traditional Thanksgiving food, for us it is Polish Sausage and sauerkraut, which weirdly is my favorite part of the meal and the first thing to go.
I once had a friend, who was kind of a bitch, so maybe not my friend, that won't eat sausage and hotdogs because she said they looked like penises- so sometimes I pretend to give sausage/hotdogs fellatio just to spite her.
I am making myself a T-shirt that say "Highly Inappropriate" you know just to warn people.

How sad is it that I am totally dying laughing at my own comment.

Love you kitchen!! You had a vision and have accomplished it. I am definitely ready to come over for dinner. I will even help you cook if you want. Some cooks don't like the help...but I am offering.
What are we having?

I love that corner, where you have the 3 pictures. I love how the corner is flat. We have a rounded wall in our house, it's weird, very 50's.

Your kitchen turned out wonderful. Sign me up for dinner and a basement tour please.

Your conversations with Mary...love them!

I have stainless steel stuff and I'd take black over it any day. I've got new fingerprint and water spot art on everything all the time. How do you like your sink/faucet set up - with the angled faucet?

I have to say, I just love that shade of green with that particular shade of blue. Also, I love your backsplash. That sounds vaguely dirty but you know what I mean.

I desperately want old avocado (or mustard) appliances in my next kitchen!!

I think it looks spectacular and I totally have a badass avacado fridge I can give you when my kitchen remodel is done. I love the fridge, it is a beast, but I love matching appliance more.

Great post. I'm over for dinner any time you want. :D

Do you watch House Hunters, btw? Your post so reminded me of HGTV, which is my new obsession.

Also, you used the word "embiggens"! Are you a secret Simpsons fanatic?

Lora, it's fabulous and just fits. Everything is perfect and right! I am so impressed.

cute kitchen!! Our dining room in the last house we lived in had a diagonal corner like that. I thought I was all original! We did it because we had to re-do some plumbing and we ended up with pipes running down the hall. I told my carpenter friend who did the drywalling that I wanted it exactly big enough so that I could put 8x10 picture frames all down it. I was going to get silver frames and black and white pictures of my kids. Not professional pictures, but home-baked pictures. We weren't there long enough. My new house is newer adn more modern, but my old house had way more character. Way. I like old houses.

Loving the whole mom conversations with Mary! LOL. we had a grotto-ish thing out by the pool when I was a kid. we called her "Our Lady of the Birdbath." My mother was not thrilled by that. a neighbor mom was over one day with her 5 kids to swim in the pool with the 4 of us. At one point mrs. g. looks at mom and says "Blessed Mother my ass--her and her one kid. Big deal."

It's awesome and fabulous, and all the more so because YOU did it yourself! Bravo-- and I do adore the daVinci print-- nice going! We have similar taste-- I love the farmhouse table, etc. Congrats!

What an incredible tour! Thank you so much! I love old things, too, but I'm kind of a clutz so I have to keep them put away.

I would love to come to dinner. Would you please invite your friend, Susan? I laughed so hard I cried and had to go get a tissue!

We had to leave our avocado fridge as part of the deal in our last house! It still looked awesome on the outside, but was falling apart inside!

It's cute to think of Jake "taking care of the babies dressed like he was going to the office." He's so adorable!

Wonderful post. I read it a few times to make sure I didn't miss anything!

I love it. Cozy and crisp and full of character.
I'm impressed how close you are to Mary.
And I'll be over after the holidays. If that works for you.

I love your kitchen. Its beautiful and completely perfect. It has personality and I love that. I wish my boyfriend would let our house have personality! ;)

Wanna do my kitchen over?
I live in apartments that once was a hotel, so i have a small small kitchen.

I also want a pink Smeg fridge, so can you work with that?

I can totally pay you in blog comments? That could work.

"Your mama's so old she was the cocktail waitress at the last supper." VERY funny.
Great job on the kitchen!

First off, marshmallows on yams? I had that for the first time this year... yuck! How do these things become tradition?

My kitchen is wayyy better than my moms- thats why we do holidays here.

I am totally doing that same backsplash, but mine will be the more bronzey color... it looks pretty easy to do... right???

There's a party in your head I want to go to. I don't know which is funnier, "embiggen" or being drunk enough to eat a cigarette butt.

Your kitchen is wonderful! I can't believe you did so much yourself. Take a bow. I have a feeling you are filled with the same false confidence I am....something needs doing and we think, "No problem!" and then we proceed to learn a thing or two along the way. My lessons are always a bit expensive, but it all works out in the end. ;)

It looks great! I agree about the black appliances. Someday I'll have my commercial grade stainless set with wall ovens. We looked at a house 5 years ago with a built in brick oven. Oh I could've died in that kitchen, but it was a 10,000sq ft. foreclosure in ruins. The kitchen was about the only inhabitable room in the house.

Man, my parents got divorced way too early. I was only 7 mos old. Although I do have all their wedding pictures to mock and scan to put on the internet if anyone pisses me off.

Glad you had a nice Thanksgiving. I am just now coming back to reality after my trip to Paris. I finally got my reader down to 500 unread posts...

I love the kitchen. I'm coming over in a couple weeks. I will do my best not to lift your Jesus statue cause I kind of covet it. I want to thank you for pointing out a positive to divorce too! I'm going to share that with my kids later. :)

I love it! It looks fresh and inviting, yet antiqued at the same time. Nice mix of old, traditional with new, modern.

A high tech stove/oven that was avocado green? I would so buy it. So awesome.

I love your Mary figure. In the space where my shop will be, there is one hidden back by the window and I'm hoping that when I get the keys on monday and it's officially my space that she's still back there.

I like hearing about your Thanksgiving. And I'm glad that you had a wonderful time! I'm weird like that and enjoy hearing about other people's good times!

I LOVE!!!!! your kitchen. Wonderful, comfortable and homey.
Which knobs are you annoyed with? The drawer bin type? The wooden ones or the other ones (can't quite see these... not close enough to see the detail on them. Regardless you can change hardware when ever you run into ones that will work for you & that will make you happy. A good site is www.myknobs.com. Yes! I know! Sounds naughty, but its really cabinet hardware.
Anyway, i like your blog and will be reading regularly now.

I love all the virgin Mary's everywhere. Awesome. But have you lost a lifelong friendship over All-Clad cookware. When/if you do, let me know and we'll compare notes.

You are so rocking. I am envious of your trust in your skills. When I do home improvement it LOOKS like DIY.

I love the blue color on your wall!

ANd the Mary. She looks friendly and beat up round the edges. That's the way I like my inspiration.

Um, I ADORE that backsplash!

I've been stuck in my kitchen so long... I've been missing you! So you can imagine how happy I was to come here and see your kitchen completed. You give me hope Lora.
I think I paint tomorrow... I think!
Your kitchen looks great. I'd definitely come over for dinner.
I love that you talk to Mary while you do the dishes. We need our girls. Especially when we live with all boys.

I had a really good one too. Had family visiting from the States and my partner's Aussie family. As much as my family annoys me, Thanksgiving really is better with them.

It looks Fabulous! Kudo's to you!!! And you don't want a stainless steel stove, it's a (bleep) to keep clean & smudge free! White & black are so much easier. Or you could have faded off white (perhaps ivory) like ours. Blah. :~) You've created a great space there!

Two things:
One, I love the new kitchen. I can't wait to hang out in it at your Xmas party.
Two, there is nothing wrong with drunkenly eating cigarette butts & stealing things from bars. A lot of normal people have done it.

I love the back splash. I wanted to do this for our rental kitchen but when I asked the girl at Lowe's where they kept the tin ceiling tiles she told me a row to look down with a blank look on her face. When I got to the isle she told me there was NOTHING like that down there. I gave up... :(

I love how you have Mary at your sink and have girl talk when you do the dishes. I have her on a laminated wallet size card in my planner and we talk all the time too. I do talk to the angels, but it's hard getting them together for a group photo.
Enjoy your blog.
