coloring my parachute

You know how when you are a student, and you have to report your occupation, you write "student" in the box or you say "student" to the person who asked you and your entire identity is formed around "student".  You get discounts and free stuff and all that?

And I have friends who didn't go back to work after they had their babies and when anyone asks them what they do they answer "I'm a mom" and they get love and hugs and support and people say things to them like "you have the hardest job in the world" and "I don't know how you do it".

Well, you don't usually get paid to be a student, and sure as certain no one is paying anyone to be a mom.  But Student and Mom are two very valid careers.

I'm going to start doing that.  I'm not so much a student, and I don't ever tell people the mom thing because I can't bring myself to be the sort to gratuitously talk about the damned kid all the time.  But I'm going to start telling people that I'm a writer and a photographer and an actor.  Yeah, I'm not getting paid for any of that.  Yeah, it's not my day job (that I won't be quitting any time soon in order to pursue those things).  But it's what I like to do.  And it's what I "do", technically.  I write, I take photos, and I act.  I do all those things.  And it sounds so much cooler than my job.

When I explain my dayjob- which is hard to do- people usually say something like "I don't know how you do that" or "I can't work with those people, they would make me sick" or "my mom is a social worker/therapist/whatever" or "oh, man" and then they want to hear horror stories ("so what's like, the worst thing you've ever seen/heard/whatever") and when I tell them, I get sad or mad because they're so bad.  And seriously?  Work is only 37.5 hours per week.  And that's when I go everyday.  I get three weeks vacation, nine paid holidays, three floating holidays, eleven sick days, and nine personal days plus we get off early every Friday in the summer.  There are 168 hours in a week.  Why should define myself by something I do less than 22.3% of my time? I sleep for 50, sometimes 60 hours a week.  Technically sleep is more "done" than work.

I'm going to start living in the five to nine and keep my nine to five out of my mind when I'm not ninetofiving and see where it takes me.

So, next time you see me, ask me what I do.  And I'll tell you.

And I want to know... what do you do?

Good call! And a right fine writer/photographer/actress you are! (I know I haven't seen you act, but I'm trusting the tears of your peers, a little deductive reasoning (LEO!), and my own keen instincts)

I'm going to go all mysterious and vague and say that I'm a student of life and expression, a renaissance of a woman. I will admit that I have mad hacky-sack skills, which is totally impressive in the grand scheme of things!

I'm fighting the urge not to write about what a socially loaded question that is! but, coming from you? not so much

Sometimes when I am "on call" and my pager goes off; I will say things loudly about how hard it is to be a doctor. Kev gets upset.

I am an extreme social worker; photographer; comedian; dog rescuer; and a reincarnated anxious and angry buddha.

Right now, I am a little lost and not sure how to answer the question!

Oh, I love this idea. Only problem, I haven't figured out what I like to do. I tend to do what others like because I am a pleaser. I think I've forgotten what I personally like to do. Sad, huh?

You are so right (the comment you left at Pagan Culture) this is kind of freaky, something must be in the air that is making people question their true identity.

And to answer your question: I'm a Pagan writer and a student, and I get paid for studying WOOOOHOOO!

And and I LOVE the fact that you are defining yourself by what you love and not what you do, that's awesome my luv!

For a while now I've identified myself as a photographer. I figure all I need is a serious website and some business cards and I'm all set!

I always feel weird, or like a liar, when someone asks what I do and I say "I'm a writer." Because I haven't earned much of anything doing that (savings are running out). But I don't have any money-making job. Sometimes I say "I'm self-employed," which seems more honest, and less "Since no one thinks my writing is worth a fiddler's fart, I don't contribute anything to life or society." I guess I could say, "I'm like a squeegee guy: I offer people something they don't want and make no money at it" but that's not true, of course, since squeegee guys do earn money. Oh Christ, that's depressing...

When I was a student I actually felt silly putting "student" on stuff.

Now when I tell people I'm a mom, I worry that they'll think "your kid is over a year old, isn't your mat leave over by now?"

The mom job is busy. I think yours is too. And you're still a mom during all those hours that you're not at work - your laundry and housework and kid-cuddle time has to be compressed!

9 to 5 I am an attendance secretary who acts like a surrogate parent, part-time event planner, tech support, but 5 to 9, I am a writer who has a 3/4 novel, a scrapbooker, a blogger, a photographer, a MOM, soon to have a semi-empty nest, and a friend, confidant, etc.
