You know you live in Philadelphia when you spend all week in anticipation of Friday because it's only going to be ninety degrees by then.

Only.

There's an old song by the Lovin Spoonful called Summer in the City that hits the whole thing right where it needs to be hit.  I love that song.

And holy crap, how about that storm yesterday?  I was actually caught outside in it, but I do that sort of stuff on purpose.  Growing up on the south shore of a Great Lake it's pretty hard to ruffle my weather feathers.  Seventy-five mile winds and dime sized hail?  Bring it.

I didn't even carry an umbrella with me yesterday.  But I will admit that when the hail started I tucked myself into a subway stairwell on Broad and Ellsworth and watched the thing from a dozen feet or so underground with a dozen or so strangers..

And to make is awesomer?  Someone above ground and across the street was shooting fireworks and flares into the air during the whole thing.  Why?  I don't know.  Dangerous?  Hells yes.  But it was still pretty damned cool.

I love extreme weather.  It brings us all together in a strange and beautiful way.  We are all at the mercy of something big that we can't control, and we start taking care of each other like old comrades.  We laugh in spite of it, complain because of it, check in on our neighbors, and when we pass on the street or wait in line at the bank we always have something to talk about.

Talking about the weather isn't so bad.  I don't know why it gets such a bum rap.

Weather is the common denominator.

If you ask me, at least.

But who am I?

Just a girl who's happy there's a break in the heat.

I'm headed down to Baltimore tomorrow.  MJ is hosting and (blogless) Nadine and I are driving down in her car and Tavia is coming from Central PA and Nicole is headed over from the Eastern Shore.  We all used to waitress together back in the golden olden days, so you know there'll be no shortage of storytelling and laughing and catching up.

I can't wait to get some time in with my fatgirls.  It's much needed, and next time I hope even more of us can make it.  We are literally all over the globe these days, so it's not so easy.  Used to be we were about sick of each other every damned day now we are heartsick for one another.  Funny how times change.

Also?  We will be making Lavender Gin Fizzes to wash down the crabs.

PS- I've never eaten a crab out of the crab and I don't know if I'll be able to stomach it but there will be plenty of other food.  I have issues with using an animal's carcass as a vehicle to eat said animal.  Or like, meat off the bone.  Using a chicken drumstick bone or a rib as an emmereffing HANDLE to ease you in the gnawing of the meat?  Ohmygross.  Also, I'm not a big fan of cutesy nicknames to distract a person from what they are actually eating.  It's not a drumstick.  IT'S A G.D. LEG!  YOU ARE EATING SOMEONE'S LEG!  Ever wonder why fish is called fish and chicken chicken and turkey turkey and crabs/shrimp/lobster/ scallops, crabs/shrimp/lobster/scallops but beef isn't called cow and when you eat a pig it has a billion different names depending on what part you are eating?

I think that's racist.
Specist.
Definitely some sort of -ist.

You have never picked a crab? Oh, you are in for a real treat! You might just want to eat the legs. Or I can pick some for you. Can't wait for a much needed girls night!

Probably because each part of the pig is so different that in many ways it hardly seems to come from the same animal.

That storm yesterday was crazy! It came all the way to Cambridge. Sideways rain!

Heat bouncing off the pavement makes summers HOT.

Have a good trip.

I wish we had gotten a storm here. I absolutely love thunderstorms. I love when it gets really windy and you can smell the storm coming. Yesterday was so hot and we got rain for about 3 minutes, that was it :(

I agree- eating things off their carcass is terrible. Ick. I like my meat to come packaged and undecipherable from the grocery store. TYVM.

Meat directly from the bone is DI-SGUST-ING. Gag.

i like crabs but i haven't had them in forever. and picking them can get kinda old, unless you have nowhere to go, plenty of booze and plenty to bs about, which i'm sure we will. i am in desperate need of a fat day.

ahem...[Singing in Louis Prima Voice]: Closer to the bone, the sweeter is the meat...The last slice of Virginia Ham, is the best that you can eat. Don't talk about my baby, she's slender but she's sweet. And closer to the bone, the sweeter is the meat.

you are so right about the storm.
I love storms too, but they can be pretty scary.
check out my blog. 29 hours without electricity!

you are hilairous about the meat and the crab.

my husband is with you. He doesn't like to eat wings or crabs or anything like that with this fingers. He avoids these foods in this form.

BTW, fellow commenters, it wasn't just a storm, it was a STORM....very damaging too.

It beheaded the flowers in my garden and made giant holes in my screens from the hailstorms. I hardly have any damage compared to some people.

This weather HAS been extreme! Heat. Humidity. Hail. It's like the other H word...Hell! I too am glad to see a little reprieve. Fireworks DURING the storm? I've never, ever seen that.

Have a great time with the gals! I'll be rethinking our menu this weekend...your post gave food for thought, or is it thought for food?
:-)

Totally know what you mean about the weather. It was *only* 88 yesterday, and not as sticky as it has been. It actually felt better.

Hope you have a good time in Baltimore. I'm not sure I could eat a crab out of its carcass either. Of course, I'd probably also have to eat crab. I don't eat anything that swims.

:( I know I shouldn't bitch because I am vacationing in SD and it's beautiful and wonderful... but, I am so needing a fatgirl moment. Especially given the size of my ass. Have fun without me:)

I love talking about the weather. I bitch about it back home, all the time. HOME = GRAY SKIES the majority of the time.

But I am having a month of BLUE, SUNNY SKIES and it is awesome and it is hot but no humidity oh and yes it makes a difference. Yes, 95 degrees is hot, dah, but I am not dripping wet from 95 and sticky and the nights here are gorgeous they cool down, you get a breeze in the SUMMER and STARS!!!

Have fun on your girls weekend, I will be enjoying the SUN and BLUE skies!!

It's like lobster!! It's the same colour cooked as raw, and then to watch people suck it's insides out is totally gross!

I've lived in the mid-Atlantic for 21 years and just can't get with eating crabs or anything with Old Bay on it...and let me tell you how many folks have looked wounded when I express that here.

I don't mess with criticizing the weather; I criticize the entire summer season. It sucks. I hate it and it's romantic, fun-filled facade.

Lavender Gin Fizz.....recipe please?

A bad habit I taught my children, I run to the window the minute I hear thunder. Mother Nature is an amazing woman.
I do enjoy eating from the bone, it feels primal to me in a way. Me. Susan. Me. Eat. Meat. Arg. My issue is eating an animal in their true form. I could never eat a crab or lobster whole or go to a pig roast. I like to be oblivious.

Reminds of that time oh so many years ago I walked home to CC from my job in South Philly during Hurricane Floyd. You really haven't lived until you've done that in the city.

ha---so you wouldn't be knawing away on those smoked turkey legs at the Ren Faire?? ;-)

I went to my first lobster bake a few weeks ago and was SO excited to eat myself some delicious lobster meat dipped in buttah. But then came the cracking of the shell and the pulling of the meat and the squirting of the juices and I was so turned off by the whole thing that I had about two bits before I pushed the entire plate away because UGH. I felt like such a monster.

The meat closest to the bone is the best. I like to growl when I pick up a bone. I'm classy like that.
I'm pretty sure I could kill my own food and would actually feel better about it than just eating what some jerk ushered in to a slaughterhouse.

Holli said...

LOL, specist... THAT was funny. And exactly why i can't eat seafood. Or even chicken anymore really. It has to be an innocuous slab of meat for me to eat it.

I could never distract myself from the whole eating a body part thing; been a vegetarian for over 25 yrs. now...enjoy your trip to Baltimore!

So I guess you don't like snails either. I love those little babies. Dipped in butter and followed with some french bread. yum. and washed down with some dry white wine. I'm telling you they are heaven.

Hope your gathering was fun.

That storm was hideous, but I know what you mean about neighbors coming together. It gets everyone out of the house to talk. Check out my photos on Facebook. The storm damage to our yard was significant. But really, we're lucky. A few blocks down, some houses and cars demolished.
