I was out with some of my improv team on Friday night, and someone asked me if Jake is funny.
"Hilarious"
"What kind of funny?  Like, what does he do or say that makes him funny?"
"Everything.  He's just a funny kid.  I mean, both Dave and I are pretty funny so I guess it would be weird if he wasn't.  But he's just sort of organically funny.  The stuff he says is off the wall, even for a kid."

Fast forward to yesterday, at lunch.  Jake isn't much of a drawer, but yesterday he was on a roll.  Aliens and rockets and bottles (I don't know either) and houses and stuff.  It was the first time he ever really sat down on his own accord and drew since he drew the pirate.

I asked him to draw a family portrait, and a picture of our house on the back of his placemat.
At first glance, I figured it was Dave, me, Jake, his imaginary brother also named Jacob*, and Tyler standing outside of  a house that looks nothing like our house.

"Can you tell me about the people in this picture?"
"Sure, that's Tyler there on the right, then me, then you, then some fat lady who jumped in the picture while I was drawing it because she thought that would be funny to do, then Daddy.  We're standing under a big fluffy white cloud"
"Really?  A fat lady?  Is that nice to say?"
"Is it nice that she just jumped in and ruined this like that?  All I wanted was a nice picture of our family together and I got this"

That's the kind of funny Jake is.

Where he got the fat thing I have no idea.  We say things like douchebag in front of him, but not fat.  Fat is mean.  Douchebag is just a statement of fact.

*my next door neighbors growing up, the Menuto's, had two brothers named Mark.   I think it was maybe as a result of adoption, or maybe the husband and the wife both brought sons named Mark into the marriage, but it was weird.  I can't imagine the confusion.  It's hard enough to have two Jacobs in the house and one isn't even real.

That's hilarious! My kids are funny, but they don't realize it because they're so literal they don't really get our brand of humor.

Now there's a boy with imagination. And, apparently, a freaked out sense of humor about 15 years older than he is.

Give him another twenty years and he'll have his own blog about imaginary Jacob and the rude fat lady who jumps into drawings, and perhaps a ninja and a half-cyborg cat too.

Something about this post reminds a lot of Axecop (axecop.com). If you're not hip, Axecop is a webcomic written by a 5-year old and illustrated by his 29-year old brother. It is six and a half thousand kinds of awesome. Also, Axecop is in the middle of a 10-comic team up with Dr. McNinja (drmcninja.com), who is my personal lord and savior. No, wait...I mean personal role model, not lord and savior.

Ha! Well she did jump into the picture uninvited you know?!!!
Hope he keeps Jacob with him for a long time!
My brother had an imaginary friend...I missed him when he was gone.

we are in the 'what if' stage with henry. as in 'what if your teeth were candy... then you'd EAT YOUR TEETH!!!!' or 'what if sissy and i were the grownups. then we'd have to wipe your butts!!!!'

kid humor rocks.

I think fat is just a statement or observation, not mean. :) Like, I say I'm fat and people go, "Oh, don't say that!" and I'm like why? I AM FAT. NO ONE CAN ARGUE WITH THAT FACT.

But I do try to teach Tori that SOME folks feel really horrible when you call them fat and you have to be careful.

Sigh.

Jake is so wise beyond his years.

And yes, my 3-year old grandson used the word 'stupid' (about a pencil, I think) and his parents and I drew a collective GASP and he was told in no uncertain terms that he was NEVER to use that word again!

Kids are awesome!! I love that too, how kids do funny stuff when they don't really mean to. When they actually TRY to be funny it's a little annoying - when it happens on it's own it's priceless.

That pic is too cute!

I love how Jake threw some rudeness into his family pic. Hilarious!

"Fat is mean. Douchbag is a statement of fact." So freaking true!

Also, kids are so funny, if it weren't for these kind of moments I would wonder why we had them... and that's not mean, it's just a statement of fact.

Ah, bless Jake! I remember well how my own children (all grown up now) used to come out with such random and funny comments. Make sure you write them all down to treasure - of course you are doing so!

I agree with you on the fat vs douchebag.
