we sit and make lists

Samantha and I were out yesterday.  Talking. Talking about how it's funny that Kids These Days are wearing the same things that were in way back when I was in high school.
You know, twenty years ago when I started high school?
Twenty Years?
Ago?

That's how you know your primetime has come and gone.  When things that were cool when you were cool are cool again.

Samantha was wearing some sort of version of something that I would have worn.  Twenty Years Ago.
And she looked all styley.

Things are a little different.  Instead of long johns people wear tights.  Instead of Doc Martens, Uggs.  Flannel seems of a different quality.  Thinner.  Tighter.  Pillier.  Brighter.  Less lumberjacky.  More, I don't know.  Urban?  Urbane?  Funny to think it's the same stuff that was made into men's suits.  It's got to have changed one hundredfold since then.

But it's all the same as it was back then.  Mensyish kinda clothes for the girls.  The same for the boys.  Hair all unilength all unistyle all unisex.

I'll admit that I'm sporting a deep side part.  A little unkempt.  A little dirty.  A little grade ten.
I'm enjoying the resurgence in eyeliner.  God, I love eyeliner.

When I see a teenager in those sort of clothes, I feel younger.
Good because I'm too young to feel old, and I'm still young enough to be cool, ish.
Bad because it's sort of creepy to look at a 15 year old as a peer.

As a benchmark.
As an icon.

Bad because I feel teen angst.

Fashion is the new Facebook.

Ohmygod.  It's her.  Ohmygod.  Here he comes.  Ohmygod.  Here he comes with her.
I'm too fat/skinny/ugly/pretty/stupid/smart/tall/short.  I'm wrong.  Everyone else is right.  Someone is going to laugh.  At me.

Fifteen year old children have the capability to make me feel less.

Even though I'm more.
So so so so so much more.

So much more than I ever was then.  So much more than they may ever be.  So much more than I ever thought I would be when I was just like them.  When being just like them was cool the first time around.

I have a shirt leftover from high school.  One shirt.  Men's.  Circa 1993.  Sized large.  Gap.  Plaid.  Buttondown.  Colors that don't exist anymore.  Spiced mustard.  Dusty teal.  Neon maroon.  Grapety purple.  I'm bringing it back into rotation.
The kids are gonna go wild over it.

I've noticed the flannel is back too. That was late middle school for me. 7th and 8th grade. For me, the pinnacle of the angsty years. Once I got to high school I was able to have the self confidence to not care so much what others thought. I had real problems at home, and the petty crap at school just wasn't worth it.

I was reading People magazine and I realized that I didn't recognize ONE SINGLE dude from their "sexy at any age" 20-29 section. It was weird.

Lucky for you that you continue to look about fifteen. Unlucky for me that I look like Columbo with a hangover.

Welcome to my world-- to the nth degree! Not fun, but it seems that life is being run by the people who don't remember phones with cords... Yikes!

uggs will never be better than the good dr. marten.

I was having small talk to day with a coworker. We talk often, she's a sweetheart, we relate ok on a superficial level. Her clothes are cute, I like her hair. And then today she says, "Today is my mom's 37th birthday." Huh? What? I can NOT be old enough to be your mom. That was a very scary moment for me.

You should see the flannel I wore in my youth in Maine. When I was in college in northern Maine, we knew who came from out of state when they did not have the current LL Bean pattern in their attire.

Kevin picked out a pack of wash cloths in that same color palette and I immediately thought, "retro".

You are SO much more.

I have been seeing things that were popular 40 years ago!!! And that really freaks me out. Pea Coats...Bohemian style clothing...ahh memories!!!!
Yes we are so much more. We are the coolest ever. We see and we know! We are fierce!!!

I take the bus home from work around the time school gets out. I can't help but to look at the fashions going on.

Sometimes I am jealous and sometimes I am just plain confused!

Well, I graduated from high school 20 years ago. And I was never cool.
But I do I rock my Docs daily.

Remember the waffle knits that you would wear under the flannels?

I love grapety purple.

I think I owned that shirt. I was excited flannel came back until I realized it wasn't MY flannel, some reincarnation.

Also: I will NEVER wear stirrups again, I don't care what you say, GAP.

I swear to God I had the same flannel shirt. I wore til it was a dish rag.

For the longest time I kept one of my college flannels hanging around. I probably still have it somewhere. It is so true how it feels to look at "kids" of a certain age and just flash back immediately. Sometimes I look at my daughter and flash ahead, but mostly I just imagine her in the certain "modes" I was in. Nutty!

And OMG, what Michele just said, holy cow about being the same age as a co-worker's mom. Crazy! (p.s. My hubby's from Maine, so I can only imagine!)

I'm so with you on this one. It freaks me out to see kids wearing shit I wore back in 5th grade even. You know.... all the Madonna stuff? Jelly shoes, jelly bracelets.... and I just saw that Hypercolor is back in style again. I NEVER thought that would come back! I've been seeing Docs around here in Dallas on the kids at the mall and cutting off your jeans into long shorts and rolling them? a la Dirty Dancing?

Totally freaks me out. I can't believe it's been 18 years since I graduated high school. What really makes me feel old though is the resurgence of 80's and 90's music that the kids now think is cool....and are calling "classic shit".

ummm, I still listen to that?

-->We're the same age so I can totally relate.
However, I had a school uniform so that is at least still "in style" 20 years later.

and I'm with you Janna B--- no way in HELL am I wearing stirrups again! Or those onesie type shirts... the ones that snapped on the bottom under your crotch and then rode up your ass all night..... what the hell were those called?

It's scary when you're at the mall and you see a bunch of 10-11 year old girls and you're not sure if they are having a '80s Dress Up party or if it's all their normal clothes.

Do kids even know what Doc Martens are today?

So true and now I have the urge to go watch Singles and soak it all in. Too bad it's 1:30 AM Thanksgiving Eve and I have a busy day tomorrow. Thank you for the memories and is it just me or is neon something that could have stayed in the 80s? There are still docs in our house, they are Mike's. I wish I owned a pair but I never did.

I wasn't stylish then, but the resurrection of tights as pants makes me want to sigh. Deeply.

And, @ Holli - Body suits. Nope, not ever again.

I couldn't afford the clothes that were stylish when I was younger and now that I can afford stylish clothes I choose to be a bum :)

Hi Lora! Thanks for welcoming me back! And I "totally" get you! "So rad, man!" I love teaching high school students because I can live vicariously through them and I *think* I am keeping myself young with them. But when I've done round robin questions and I asked a stumper (cue chirping crickets from the room), I made a comment of "Anyone? Anyone? Beuller? Bueller? ..." and no one in the room got the reference, I truly then felt old...like such a dork! hehe And I'm with you: love my eyeliner!!!

"See" you later! :D
