more useful than the Social Security list

I flaked on Christmas cards this year.  I love Christmas cards.  I hate when I don't send them out.
Maybe I'll do Valentines like I did a few years ago.  Who doesn't love getting Valentines in the mail?  It's a dying art.

Most of my friends don't have kids.  Or, well.  I don't know.  More and more of my friends are having kids.  I guess that's what happens in your mid to late 30s in this modern life we are living.  Your friends start having kids.  And stop sending Christmas cards.  Most of the Christmas cards came from families and friends without kids.  But some moms and dads were very very good this year, and on top of their card-sending shiz.
Without further ado, here is a run down of the Names My Friends Picked for their Kids. (Writer's Note- if someone who remains childless sends a card out with a picture of a pet on it, the pet is listed here. Please do not try to publicly guess which ones are pet names.  That's like asking a chubby girl when she is due.  There are four pets listed here.)
I'm sensing that mothers of Liams' and of Henrys' are the most responsible moms of all.  (Personal Aside- Tavia- using this logic, you win for Responsible Mother of the Year!!)

If you didn't send me a card this year and you would like your child(ren)'s name added to the list.  Leave it below.  I love names.
Not included are Jake's little school friends who brought cards to school.  I didn't want to put their names on the internet, even though I really really want to because a few of them are doozies.  South Philly people love to make up words and slap them on children.  The best (saddest) is the poor last-born girl-child with one or more big sisters and no brothers.  They are the ones who usually get dad's name with an -anna or -ia tacked on to the end "to make it sound Italian".  The machismo that goes on in our community is strong, my friends.

Jake did not bring cards to school.  He brought Christmas pencils.  I thought it was a greener, more consumable option.  Probably not though, once you add production and packaging and shipping and I wonder how long it takes for the little metal band around the eraser to return to dust and I'm not sure what they use for lead these days, especially in dollar store pencils but I'm sure it has an obscene half life and whoa, speaking of lead I wonder where they were made, that could have been lead paint in there or maybe sweatshop babies had to make those, that's not good.
I have a friend who doesn't believe in giving gifts that cannot be consumed within one year's time.  Lots of cosmetics, candles, food, drinks, etc. come my way from her.  It's great because the gift says "I care about you enough to buy you something to pamper yourself" at the same time it says "I care about you enough to buy you something that won't kick around your house until the end of time".
If you are friends with me in real life I've probably given you soap, alcohol, or candles.  It's my way of paying homage to consumability so you don't have some dumb piece of knick knack paddy crap taking up shelf space and collecting dust.

I was in the 'hood on tuesday at my sister's house. It was raining and miserable and I had to spend it with three sisters, two I like and the other not so much. Why do people always feel guilty about saying they don't like a sibling? Maybe they are afraid some of their obnoxious genes are in them too. LOL!

anyway, I didn't do christmas cards this year, and it ate me alive until on christmas day we did so great family portraits and I sent out new year's cards.

Check out my blog you will see it! I am going to post soon.

Someday, when I am in the 'hood again, I will come to meet in person. I bet we have a great time. Maybe, you will let me park in front of your house. What a freaking nightmare having to jock the damn car around after two hours so the parking meter man/maid didn't give us a ticket.

Oh South Philly, machoism and parking, your two claims to fame!

Send me a Valentine's card.

I totally should have sent you a Christmas card! I even have extra. If you want one email me your mailing address. lol. Cuz you know, I'd be a stalker if I wasn't so busy with the minions.

Their names are:
Jordan
Tennyson
Mitchell
Elliot

Two of them are girls.

I'm with you, I love use-up-able gifts. I love gift certificates for pedicures and restaurants - especially when the card also mentions the willingness to babysit while I use these things.

Things I don't like? Well I won't mention them here, just in case someone I know somehow follows me over...

Merry Christmas!

You know what else is cool? That my Christmas cards say Happy Holidays on them, much to the chagrin of my oh-so-traditional and religious friends and family. But it's cool because the stack of cards that are still sitting in my van will make it out somewhere around the holiday season. I'm sure "Early in the New Year" counts as holidays.

We did send out cards, but not as many as usual. It has gotten expensive, espcially for those with little chilren, however, not many of our contemporaries have small children, unless circumstnaces have been such that they have become guardians for their grandchildren.

I guess I haven't received a Valentine's card except from my husband since I was in public school. However, it might be nice to recieve some.

Carolyn
Gary
Lisa
Billy Jack (for real it is on his birth certificate)
Linda

guess which are the oldest ones :D

Happy New Year

I'm guessing Finn is somebody's goldfish?
BTW - I have it on good authority that Christmas isn't officially over until January 6, so there's still time to mail cards

I didn't do cards for Christmas this year. But, some years I do, some years I don't. It's a hit and miss thing.

I love classic names. I have no idea what I will name my child but I do know what her middle name will be, if the baby is indeed a girl. She will take my late mother's middle name as her own. Basically my mother hated her middle name, I loved it and I always thought if I named a sweet grandkid with a name she hated she'd eventually learn to LOVE the name as much as her grand kid. :)

[if you're curious of the name email me... I don't want to give it away for fear someone will steal my thunder! hehe]

i love this. it is the opposite for me tho. none of my friends without kids send christmas cards, while the ones with kids do. hmmmmm.....I think a serious east coast comparison to west is in order. what sociological implications does this uncover?!

I Love Holiday Cards!

I love to get them but over the years the numbers have dwindled. I still send them but that is my joy!

Oh, my kids names.

Lead in pencils is actually graphite. They don't use lead in them. Not sure if they ever did, but no worries.

I think Ticonderoga pencils are made right here in Philadelphia somewhere. Google them.

BTW, Finn is actually a very popular name these days, along with Chase (not named after the bank monopoly) and Flynn. a new trend is to use last names for first names. Well, really old one.

Those names are nothing compared to some.
And here's a test, how many ways, can you spell Caitlin!

I love that there were no other Zacharys on the list. Funny story though. I was out shopping the other day, and on 2 separate occasions an Aaron and a Zachary got in trouble, but they weren't mine! My kids were at home. It was awesome.

Love this. Do not love how Liam has crept into the top 5 list in popularity. This was not the case when I named him. Oh well. It's still an awesome name. Oh yeah, and so is Henry.

Boaz?

Really? Maybe it's a family name.

Justin (as in just-in-time, he was born Dec. 30. I worked for a CPA and he gave me a bonus for such a timely deduction.) That's true, but I really liked the name Justin and it was 22 years ago and there weren't that many of them then.

Dane. Was very uncommon 18 years ago, but it's getting more popular among the surfers. I told my parents from Texas that if he every played football, they could call him Great Dane. He doesn't play football. His brother used to call him Dane the Pain. Now we all call him Dane the Brain.

I don't stress too much about gifts and cards. I give what I want to give, send what I want to send.

Hope you had a good holiday time.
